Ritos e Contraculturas rurais. It is conceived as an artistic research project that originates in As Neves, understood as a first site-specific point of activation from which to expand into other rural contexts. The research focuses on rituals that remain active within the territory, exploring both their relationship with the environment and the processes of transformation and mobility they undergo in contemporary contexts.
The project develops through processes of listening, collaboration, and engagement with local communities, understanding knowledge as a collective construction. In this sense, rituals are not approached solely as objects of study, but as living practices that are activated, negotiated, and re-signified in relation to the people who sustain them. They are thus understood as potentially countercultural practices, insofar as they challenge and exceed hegemonic and dichotomous views of the rural. Through audiovisual, performative, and archival devices, the project proposes a situated approach that critically reexamines the imaginaries that have historically defined these spaces.
The works are situated within rural contexts understood as territories in constant transformation, where tradition and contemporaneity do not operate as oppositions but as interwoven layers. In this sense, the project constructs a living archive of practices and forms of knowledge that resist, adapt, and are reformulated, understanding inhabiting as a dynamic, collective, and transitional process.
SANTA MARTA (2024)
Inicio. As Neves.
Beginning. As Neves. The rituals of Santa Marta and their homonymous pilgrimage, now transformed into a celebration shaped by mass consumption and media exposure. The piece proposes a reflection on the construction of the gaze surrounding traditions and community, considering the global circulation of images and the ways in which they reshape their meaning. At the same time, it addresses the influence of technology on contemporary culture, understood both as a tool for preservation and as a device that conditions and shapes the perception of reality. In this way, the work questions how the idea of “reality” is produced and disseminated, pointing to the tensions between lived experience, representation, and collective imaginaries.

A SENRA (2025)
A SENRA (2025)
A Senra is a video performance that reconstructs two rituals sharing the same space in San Cibran de Ribarteme, As Neves: an offering to the dead in purgatory through a peto de ánimas (soul alms box), and a fertility rite in the Termes River. Bridges and alms boxes become symbols of transition, memory, and care, connecting the world of the living with that of the dead. The work proposes to archive these two rituals while reflecting on life and death, transience and permanence, through the landscape and its spiritual traces.
The project continued its exploration during the residency at the Fundación Granell, where we engaged with other borderland (raia) rituals and began tracing a cartography through them. In this process, the research also led us to conceive a refuge —a symbolic and material space where collected stories, found remnants, and constructed images converge. The residency thus opened a new chapter, expanding the dialogue .
